Jour 1 -Discovery of the Massif du Sancy
This first part, starting from the van rental agency in Clermont-Ferrand, allows you to discover the fabulous landscapes of the Sancy, the highest in Auvergne.
Take the height with a first lake (Aydat) created by a lava flow which made a natural dam
Then head for Orcival, a typical Auvergnat village at the bottom of the valley which houses a magnificent 12th century Romanesque basilica. We continue towards the Guéry pass where the Guéry lake is located. Possible walk on the heights of the plateau – IGN map: n°2432ET
After the walk, head for Mont Dore at the source of the Dordogne river and at the foot of the Puy de Sancy volcano at 1886m, the highest in the Massif Central. Possibility to take the cable car to the summit or to hike through the Val de Courre (4h walk) – IGN map: n°2432ET
For the evening and the night, we strongly recommend :
A bivouac at the Col de la Croix Saint Robert
…or a bivouac at the col de la croix Morand with the Salers cows! And for the gourmets, a stop at the inn Le buron du col is a must, to taste the best Truffade and the best blueberry pie of the region!
Jour 2 – Tour of the lakes and the medieval Auvergne…
We stay in the Sancy massif to discover other aspects, both natural and cultural!
Direction the lake Chambon which proposes superb beaches, and the medieval castle of Murol to plunge in the Middle Ages
Stop at the GAEC de l’Oiseau farm (Coudert Grand, 63790 Chambon-sur-Lac): Discover the secrets of the making of Saint Nectaire, Cantal and taste the Auvergnate charcuterie.
End of the morning in the direction of the Chaudeffour nature reserve for those who want to stretch their legs: short hike at the bottom of the valley (think of your binoculars to see the chamois and marmots) (1h30 walk). For good walkers, there is the possibility of doing the tour of the crests (6 hours of walking, quite simply grandiose!)
Continue towards the medieval village of Besse. Once a fortified town, Besse has preserved its narrow, cobbled streets and beautiful stone houses… A stroll through the maze of its little streets is an instant trip back to the Middle Ages!
End of the day around the Pavin lake (crater lake), created during the last eruption in Auvergne 6900 years ago.
For a 2-day weekend, you have plenty to see: return to the VAN-AWAY rental agency! For those who want to extend their weekend, let yourself be tempted by a bivouac at the belvedere of Lake Pavin.
Jour 3 – Head for the Chaine des Puys and its 90 volcanoes…
A great way to end your Auvergne roadtrip is to take a trip to the famous Puys chain, dominated by the Puy de Dôme, which you can reach on foot or by cogwheel train.
