Welcome to VAN-AWAY Réunion Island

Located on the west coast, 40 minutes from Reunion’s Roland-Garros airport (Saint-Denis), the Van-Away Reunion car rental agency welcomes you and opens the doors of the Intense Island to you.

If you like adventure and the beauty of natural landscapes, come and discover the richness, the contrast and the diversity of our beautiful Reunion Island on board your fully equipped van or camper.

Discover Saint-Denis and its surroundings in your converted vehicle: The opinions are unanimous!

Whatever your travel desires, you are bound to find what you are looking for when you tour Reunion Island in a fully-equipped vehicle, a van or a hire motor home.

In the north of the island, you can, for example, discover the town of Saint-Denis (the capital of Reunion Island) and its superb region. From large Creole huts to multicoloured gardens, museums, churches, mosques, Tamil temples and Chinese pagodas, the Beau Pays offers picturesque and popular landscapes which are worth a visit and where you will be able to roam freely in your hire car.

The surroundings of Saint-Denis, and in particular the tourist area of Le Brulé (near the Forêt de la Providence) are the starting point of many possible hikes and walks: the Maniquet waterfall, the tour of Lake Saint-Denis, the Roche Écrite, Mafate

And to end your visit with a culinary AND cultural experience, share a Creole picnic with the Reunionnese and discover local specialities such as rougail saucisse, cabri massalé, caris…

The west of Reunion Island: the ideal van itinerary for sea lovers!

With almost 25 km of protected beaches, the west of the island is undeniably the kingdom of the seaside. From Le Port to Étang-Salé les Bains, via Saint-Paul, Saint-Gilles les Bains and Saint-Leu, Réunion’s west coast has no shortage of places to marvel at, all of which are accessible by car or hire car.

The region offers exceptionally well-preserved lagoons, protected by a coral reef, and breathtaking beaches of fine sand or black sand.

If you love the sea and travelling by car or van, you know where to go to find your favourite beach!

Putting your van or camper under the shade of a filaos tree, you can enjoy sailing, kayaking, jet skiing, diving, snorkelling or simply taking a dip in the Ermitage Natural Marine Reserve (near Saint-Paul).

And while you are in the area, don’t miss the heights of Saint Paul and the Piton MAÏDO (located at 2190 m altitude and accessible by car or van), which offers one of the most spectacular views of the cirque of Mafate. The path passes through a beautiful tamarind forest and is ideal for one or two nights in a van or camper van.

And if you stay for a while near Saint Leu, don’t forget to visit the Trou du Souffleur, the Conservatoire National Botanique de Saint-Leu, and of course Kelonia, the famous observatory and care centre for marine turtles in Saint-Leu.

From Saint-Pierre to Saint-Philippe: discover the south of Réunion by car or in a converted vehicle

The south offers a friendly and authentic, festive and exotic, natural and wellness-filled interlude, and criss-crossing its roads at the wheel of a converted vehicle or a hire motor home is a real pleasure.

From l’Entre-deux, a charming village nestled between two arms of the river, to Saint-Pierre, the capital of the South, via Saint-Philippe, bourbon vanilla is in the spotlight.

And if you want to visit a vanilla plantation and learn more about this famous spice, go to the Escale Bleue in Saint-Philippe!

And if you want to take advantage of the superb landscapes of the region, you have a choice: the Cascade Grand Galet, also known as the Cascade Langevin, the Cascade du Trou noir, the Puits des Français (between Saint-Joseph and Saint-Philippe) or Manapany, a charming little village located on the seafront…

The East: an exceptional land to discover by car, van or camper van

Between the white waters, the charm of the Indian mix, the sweet scent of bourbon vanilla, the pools and waterfalls, the sugar cane fields and the wild and green landscapes of the area, the East coast is an itinerary by van that you should not miss!

If you dream of a walk in the primary forests or in the forests of cryptomerias of the region, do not miss the mythical walks of Takamaka or the Forest of Bébour (around Saint-Benoît) and the famous Niagara waterfall (between Saint-Benoit and Sainte Suzanne).

And if you are looking for a magical place to spend the night in your car or camper van, the wide winding roads of Bourg Murât will take you to the most famous volcano: the Piton de la Fournaise. From there, you can discover the surroundings for a day (or several days), and set off to conquer the Plaine des Sables or the Pas de Bellecombe… And you can even try to climb the volcano and enjoy the exceptional panorama offered by this unusual viewpoint.

Finally, on your way back to the coast, don’t miss the Lava Road or the hidden treasures of the Piton de la Fournaise, by exploring the Lava Tunnels.
The East is also known as a land of delicacies that will satisfy the sweet tooth: vanilla, lychees, mangoes, citrus fruits and sugar cane… It’s time to treat yourself!

Salazie, Cilaos and Mafate: unique sites in the world

The Salazie cirque is the easiest to access by rental car, but it is also the most lush. Its many waterfalls (one of the most beautiful is the Voile de la Mariée) will not fail to amaze you.

And if you still want to take in the sights, hop in your rental car and head for the Belouve forest and the Trou de Fer.

The village of Hellbourg, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, with its traditional Creole architecture, is also a must-see in this area, located halfway between Cilaos and Saint-André.

The Cirque de Cilaos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is surrounded by the Piton des Neiges, the highest point on the island, which rises to an altitude of nearly 3070 m and is the starting point for 80 km of hiking trails (the most famous of which is the Piton des Neiges ascent). For the more adventurous, the cirque of Cilaos is accessible by van or rental car via the mythical and unique road with 400 bends! Fasten your seatbelt and let’s go!

Cilaos is also close to many other popular natural areas of great interest, such as the Chapelle hike, La Roche Merveilleuse or the Grand Matarum Forest!

Finally, the cirque of Mafate is the 3ᵉ site of great interest in the region. Inaccessible by car, van or camper van, a hundred or so hiking trails will nevertheless take you to the inhabited villages of the cirque (such as La Nouvelle or Marla) where you can leave your van or hire car before starting your ascent.

These sublime hikes through the forest trails immerse you in the islands where time has stood still. It is difficult to describe the beauty of the cirques, it must be experienced!

Notice to thrill-seekers and touring holidaymakers with a rental car

In addition to its breathtaking landscapes and numerous tourist attractions, Reunion Island is also a paradise for nature sports enthusiasts. With a large number of mountain bike routes and almost 1,000 km of hiking trails criss-crossing the island, all you have to do is equip your van or rental car with a bike rack and set off on your adventure.

All sporting passions can be experienced on the intense island, but only one is new, original and even totally unusual: the GRAND Raid.

The world-famous Diagonale des Fous de la Réunion is one of the 15 most difficult races in the world. More than a trail, this race is a challenge, a diagonal of fools that allows you to cross the island from south to north.
Now you know where to go with your van or camper van!
